If there was an award for perhaps the most unselfaware person currently residing in Scottish football, you’d find it tough to seek a more deserving recipient than Todd Cantwell.

The Ibrox midfielder has taken to Glasgow’s fish bowl very well. His social media antics making him a hit with his own fanbase while knowing full fell he’ll wind up some rival supporters.

Cantwell has been put back in his box several times by former Celtic hero Chris Sutton since coming to Glasgow.

The former Norwich man Cantwell finds it bizarre that Chris Sutton, a guy that is paid to talk about Scottish football would go on about a team that *checks notes* plays in Scottish football.

The lad isn’t bright and seems to be regurgitating nonsense you’d hear down the local Ibrox watering hole on any given match day.

Todd also is upset Chris has changed his tune on him since he joined the Ibrox club. Baffled that Chris once bigged him up and is now choosing to criticise. While Chris does like a good wind up, there’s a nugget of truth in the things he says even in jest. His critical take on Cantwell will be down to the fact his career hasn’t panned out and the way Todd conducts himself appears to be why he’s playing to the galleries at Ibrox.

Speaking to the Beautiful game podcast, Cantwell said: “I find it very bizarre. I’ll be completely honest, my stance on it is clear. You have pundits and ex footballers and their life is completely different because they don’t have the opportunity to play football anymore. I can’t speak about what it’s like to be an ex footballer because I’m obviously still a current footballer. There’s one thing I can’t understand when it comes to pundits who used to play football which is jumping on players or what I would call what Chris Sutton does is being an attention seeker.

“I find it very bizarre because if you had a good career why are you sitting on twitter hammering into a lad that you had an interview with saying ‘you’re an amazing player, an amazing person’ when back at Norwich and then just forget about it.

“For me, it’s not real. He’s playing up to his links with Celtic. He needs to stay relevant and that’s sad for me. If I’m an ex player and I’m tweeting a 25-year-old to stay relevant then I’d be saying ‘what am I doing’. But that’s just me, I don’t know what he’s sat at home doing. For me it’s ‘why are you so interested in Todd Cantwell?’, ‘why are you so interested in Rangers?’. You played for Celtic, fantastic. Support Celtic. Tweet about Celtic. You love them, that’s fine.

“For me he frustrates me and the reason I’ve had a couple of chomps and I don’t chomp on much is because he spoke to me at Norwich and what a fantastic footballer I was. ‘The world’s at your feet Todd’, ‘You’re a great guy Todd’. All of this and then I sign for Rangers and it’s like ‘just forget everything I said before, I’m going to start a feud with you on twitter’. “

Todd can give it out but he’s reluctant to take it back. The fact he thinks he’s making Chris Sutton relevant says it all about his ego and his lack of awareness in Scottish football.

Trying to stay relevant on podcasts and instagram taking down Chris while playing in a team that continually loses to Celtic feels more the lane Todd has chosen .

  1. An attention seeker ? Spoken by a guy who wears a hair band when playing football ! Now if Cantwell called big Sutton a’truth seeker ‘ then I would be impressed . Until that time …until that time !

  2. Cantwell was average at Norwich and now he’s an average squad player at The Rangers. He hasn’t done any of his talking on the pitch. If I were a hun I’d find his big mouth embarrassing.
