Celtic’s Tom Rogic will help make history next summer by being part of the first Australian team to take part in the Copa America.

The Socceroos made the announcement on Friday morning that they had accepted an invitation from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) to participate in the Copa America next year.

The Australian Federation declared this is a huge opportunity for the country and they are excited about the prospect of playing in the tournament next summer.

“We are ecstatic that our Caltex Socceroos will be participating in this prestigious competition for the first time in our history. said FFA Chairman Chris Nikou.

“We have been working hard over the last six months to improve our international relationships. This week we held fruitful final discussions with our colleagues at CONMEBOL in Paris and we are delighted we have been able to accept this invitation,”

Providing Tom is fit and ready to go he will be part of that Australian side that makes history along with current Celtic loan player Daniel Arzani.

Unlike the Asia Cup back in January, there will be no crossover with the season with the tournament to be played between 12 June – 12 July and will run at the same time as the Euros.

Tom has had varying levels of success with his country but his last stint with the Socceroos knocked his season off the rails. Missing a chunk of the ties at the start of the year and coming back injured meant the player never really got going again in the second half of the season. Hopefully, the midfielder hits the ground running for the bhoys next season.
