SPFL CLUBS overwhelmingly voted for the introduction of VAR to Scottish football, with only one club out of the forty-two opposing the introduction of the equipment.

VAR will be in operation in Scotland after the World Cup later this year, meaning half the season will be played without the technology and the other half with it. It’s almost certainly going to cause controversy.

VAR will only be used if there is a clear and obvious error from the referee but won’t interfere with booking or fouls. It can encourage the referee to watch a tackle on the monitor if a red card is a possible outcome. Ultimately, the technology will fail if the incompetent referees are in control of it.
