Celtic were eliminated from European competition altogether on Tuesday evening as Lazio ran out 2-0 winners in the Stadio Olimpico.

It was a disappointing defeat for the Hoops who have had a poor Champions League campaign.

With a game to go, the Celts have just a solitary point in Group E, which is in no way impressive. Former Hoops striker and now pundit John Hartson believes manager Brendan Rodgers must seek support from the club’s board.

Many fans are of this opinion too. Hartson said (Go Radio via Football Scotland): “Brendan has to go to the board and say, ‘If you want me to challenge in Europe, you’ve got to give me finances to bring in a better quality of player.

“If you want me to win league titles and cups and Trebles, I can possibly do that with the group that I have. But when you go into the Champions League, they need a better quality of player.'”

Rodgers has openly admitted that the Celts need to improve the squad next month.

January will be an intriguing month at Parkhead to say the least, and it could be a telling one for what the board’s ambitions for the football club are.
