CHRIS SUTTON has hammered Steven Gerrard and the Ibrox club for even bringing up the notion progress has been made on the domestic front and reveals a catalogue of Celtic errors which left the door open for them to ‘walk through’ only to say, no thanks.
Writing for his RecordSport column and carrying on from his rant on BT Sport when he got Alex Rae hot under the collar the former Celtic striker pointed out the upheaval at Celtic with their top striker leaving, Boyata wanting out, their terrible away form and Brendan Rodgers leaving his post.
However, the Champions are still 11 points clear in the title race with a League Cup in the bag, the title coming home and a semi-final of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
In Comparison, the ‘gap closing’ Gerrard has failed to make any real headway, failing to get to Hampden for either cup and stumbling in the league.
Here is Sutton’s assessment:
“Let’s be brutally honest, Celtic have been pretty poor in comparison with their standards of the two previous campaigns. There has been upheaval with a manager change, in-fighting over transfer kitties and Dedryck Boyata’s apparent refusal to play,
“There was Moussa Dembele’s angry departure and injuries left, right and centre with key players such as Tom Rogic, Leigh Griffiths and Kieran Tierney have missed months of the season.
“Celtic have been flat as a pancake and the door was wide open for Rangers to walk through.
“Instead of taking that walk, Gerrard and his team are still stood at the bottom of the driveway. There has been a catalogue of errors.”
Celtic have not had a vintage season but it has been a credit to the players who have kept going in less than ideal circumstances and a lot of injuries which has rarely seen the same team be played consecutively.
Chris Sutton is right, they couldn’t get near Celtic at their worst for three seasons. All they have to show for their efforts this season is a win at Ibrox versus a dilapidated Celtic side and a keyring with a picture of Ryan Kent taking a swing at Broony. Levels.
