ANDY ROBERTSON is one of the best full-backs in world football at the moment. He’s playing at a high level every week for his club and captains his country.

He is formally of Celtic’s youth academy but was released before he could get a chance in the first team. He worked his way up through the tiers of Scottish football, went down south, and before long, he was lifting the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.

The Premier League winner doesn’t hide his love for Celtic, admitting he’d love to play for the club again before the twilight of his career. It’s doubtful that this will ever happen, though; with a few years left on his Liverpool deal, the 28-year-old will be into his thirties before a move to Celtic would happen, if it ever does happen.

In Darrel Currie’s podcast, the Scotland captain opened up on his early days about how he moved into the Celtic academy and the influence of Tommy Burns.

He said;

“I can’t speak highly enough of him. He liked me as a player, and I loved him as a coach, even though I was young.

“He was from the same place as where I was from. My brother and his son played on the same days, with different teams, so I always used to see him at the local park watching his son, and I was always there, and I’d speak away to him.

“He was a huge influence. He was always honest with us, even from an early age. I always remember there were about 120 people in the hall at Celtic Park with all their parents, and he said, ‘I’m going to be honest, if one or two of yous make it, we’ve done our job’.

“I think everyone was a bit like wow, but now we look back on it, and he was right. That’s the small margins you deal with in football. He was a huge influence on me from an early age, I always wanted to impress him, always wanted to do well for him in front of him, and I think he liked me and had a soft spot for me.

“When he passed away, it was devastating for everyone.”
