Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will decide whether Callum McGregor is fit to play the upcoming Glasgow derby later this week.

The captain has been missing since he went off at half-time of a 7-1 thumping of Dundee at the end of February.

In his absence, Tomoki Iwata and Paulo Bernardo have stepped up to the plate and in fairness, done a commendable job.

There is no getting away, though, from the influence McGregor brings to the team. He possesses the utmost quality and can change a game at the drop of a hat.

Having him available to play at Ibrox would be a monumental boost, but it will depend on how he copes when he comes back to training this week.

Celtic assistant gaffer John Kennedy outlined his return process. “Hopefully Callum (McGregor) will be back in training in the middle of the week”, he told CeltsAreHere.

“We’ll get him through that then the manager will decide whether or not he’s fit to play.”

Although having the skipper back fit would encourage many, Brendan Rodgers dropping one of Reo Hatate or Tomoki Iwata, particularly after their weekend performances, would seem harsh.

One imagines it would be Iwata who drops out if the 30-year-old is indeed back in time, but the fact such arduous decisions in terms of team selection have to be made is an enormous positive, particularly given the injury issues experienced all season.
