Camilio Duran Set for New Celtic Role

Since arriving at Celtic, Camilo Duran has been forced to play out wide, with record signing Kaper Høgh occupying the striker’s position through the middle.

The Colombian striker hit three goals in three during the Hoops’ pre-season, before opening his competitive scoring account over the weekend when Celtic knocked Dundee United out of the League Cup.

Martin O’Neill has talked a lot about tactical flexibility in the side and wanting the shape to be fluid within games to adapt to situations.

And as the LASK game draws closer, the boss has said that Duran could have a new role to play, away from the wing.

Some speculated that the gaffer could go back to his 3-5-2 formation that was so successful in his first term with the club and his latest quotes suggest that that is an option.

He said:

“It’s good to have that firepower. Haissem Hassan coming in, you would probably want to play him wide right, where he can beat players and go outside.

“It’s about looking at systems we want to play.

“We’ve been pretty rigid in 4-3-3, but we should be able to change.

“I think Camilo Duran is a fine player and I don’t see why he couldn’t play just off the centre-forward.

“Therefore, we have to look at different ways of playing.”

O’Neill, speaking to the Scottish Daily Mail, added: “It shouldn’t be that difficult, in terms of shifting players a few yards, but it’s just a case of practising it.

“It’s far better to have the options. Of course, it is.

“Sometimes you think: ‘Oh gosh, how are we going to do this?”, but sometimes it just develops.”

Whether we see it from the start against LASK, midway through or even at all, it’s something that the team needs. Last season, the same repetitive football, without the ability to change or control matches, cost Celtic.

This year, with new, quality signings added, O’Neill is looking to change that, clearly. A few more additions and Celtic have the ability to be a great team.
