CELTIC defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has expressed high praise for teammate Liam Scales after he made the unexpected rise in the team’s defensive ranks and has now become a Champions League starter.

Scales, who was on loan at Aberdeen last year and seemed on the verge of leaving Celtic this summer, found himself thrust into a key role due to injuries within the first-team defence.

His response to this opportunity has impressed both his teammates and manager Brendan Rodgers.

Carter-Vickers, in particular, has highlighted Scales’ mindset as the most commendable aspect of his journey. He noted that despite potentially seeing his career at Celtic drawing to a close just months ago, Scales returned for pre-season with a strong work ethic, ready to seize any opportunity. This attitude, according to Carter-Vickers, is what has enabled Scales to perform at high levels when given the chance.

Speaking to Celtic TV, the American defender said:

“Liam has done really well. I think from the mentality that he went to Aberdeen last season and probably didn’t think he was going to be at Celtic this season. However from day one in pre-season he came in and worked hard and he’s been ready. He’s waited on his opportunity and he has taken it and he is playing really well.

“That’s the most impressive thing about it, in my opinion. The fact that maybe three or four months ago he thought that his Celtic career was over and now he’s got his chance and he showed that he was mentally ready to take it and mentally ready to perform at the levels that he has.”
