Celtic could be set for a summer transfer battle after fresh interest emerged in Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson.

The Hoops had been tracking the 21-year-old ahead of the January window but didn’t make a move with plans to revisit the deal this summer when his contract expires.

Now, that decision could come back to bite.

Italian side Bologna have now entered the race, alongside Rangers, setting up a three-way tussle for the highly-rated midfielder.

According to reports in Italy from Il Resto del Carlino, Bologna have already made enquiries about Watson, who has been a standout performer for Kilmarnock despite his young age.

The Serie A side have a strong track record when it comes to Scottish talent.

They snapped up Lewis Ferguson from Aberdeen and he’s gone on to captain the club while attracting interest from across Europe.

Watson, who has been involved in Kilmarnock’s first team since just 18 and has even captained the side, is now firmly on the radar.

With his contract winding down, it presents a major opportunity but also serious competition.

Celtic may have had the early advantage but now, they’ll need to win a fight to get their man.

There’s set to be a lot of new faces at the club this summer and Watson could still be one.
