Ally McCoist has responded after drawing criticism from Celtic fan media following his recent comments on the post-split fixtures.

The former Rangers striker had suggested Celtic were benefiting from how the fixtures had landed in the title run-in. That claim was quickly challenged, with fan outlets pointing out the wider context of the schedule and how the season balances out over 38 games.

McCoist claimed one site labelled him “deranged” for his take, something he has now addressed directly.

The reaction did not come out of nowhere. Celtic still have key matches ahead against Rangers and Hearts, and the focus has been on what happens on the pitch rather than the fixture list itself.

McCoist said: (talkSPORT), “Shock horror. Ally McCoist getting stick from Celtic fans. Well, knock me sideways! As far as I can remember, it’s happened for the best part of 40 years, me getting stick.”

He added: “I mean, there was a part of me winding up Brazil. He was doing the same to me. But listen, it’s not ideal. It never will be ideal. But as I said before, the one thing that it is, it is exciting.”

Fan media has been quick to push back because the title race is tight and every detail is being looked at closely. Celtic have not had things their own way in recent games, which has made the idea of any built-in advantage harder to accept.

There have been matches where control has slipped, even at home. That is where the discussion has centred. The focus has been on performance levels rather than where games are played.

McCoist’s comments have added another layer to that. But the response shows how closely supporters are following it, especially when the margins are so fine at this stage of the season.

With five games left and direct clashes still to come, the outcome will be decided on the pitch. The reaction to McCoist’s claim shows there is little patience for anything that shifts attention away from that.
