SCOTT ALLAN spoke exclusively to PLZ Soccer this week about his ill-fated spell at Celtic. The midfielder told Peter Martin how he knew it was the end of his time at Celtic when at first Brendan Rodgers told Scott that the player was in his plans.

However, during the first preseason after their chat Allan said he was put behind the midfielders in a more defensive role and he knew then it wouldn’t work out at all.

The media have been regurgitating this quote over the past 24 hours but as much as some might want to point at Brendan Rodgers for this one – the failing lies 100% with Allan.

Here’s what the Hibs player had to say:

“He said ‘I want you to stay here, you’re part of the plans’. I think he said to the press a few times about me not going out on loan.

“After one pre-season game he wanted me to play in front of the back four so he seen me there as opposed to behind the striker or further forward in the midfield.

“I knew myself that wasn’t my best position.

“(I like to play) in a midfield three either as the number eight or behind the striker.”

It doesn’t matter where you like to play or whether you see yourself in a different role – if your manager gives you a position and puts you on the field then you work hard to try and make that position your own. Nir Bitton has been played out of position for years but there were no complaints from the Israeli.

It seems as if Allan is making excuses, while he might not have been familiar with the role Brendan wanted for him – he should’ve been doing everything in his power to make that happen. Instead, from what he’s said in this interview, he’s not fancied being played a defensive midfielder and chucked it.

  1. Not every player is as versatile as Bitton,so i agree with Scott Allen on this one,and here’s my theory ; Rodgers,i believe, deliberately made certain decisions with players to cause confusion,in part to work his ticket out of Parkhead, and more than likely with a view to taking some very talented but disillusioned players with him down south.
    Christie,Mcgregor,Ajer,Forrest & KT.
Just for the record,i don’t believe we’d have clinched the league title last year if he’d stayed, never mind a third treble.
    We won it despite him.
