Celtic have been hailed as a bigger club than current English and European champions Manchester City.

In the mind of Andy Townsend, who played for the likes of Aston Villa and Chelsea, the Hoops have a much greater historical standing and global following than the Sky Blues.

City have only come to real prominence over the past 16 years. Funded predominantly by Sheikh Mansour, the club has won several English domestic trophies and a Champions League title since its financial takeover in 2008.

They have been criticised for buying their way to success, much unlike Celtic who have built their prosperity from the bottom, even managing to win the European Cup with a squad that was all born within 30 miles of Glasgow’s east end.

Speaking on the radio, Townsend utilised common sense to make a claim about the Hoops and City that few can disagree with. He said: [TalkSport via Football Scotland] “Celtic are a bigger club (than City), probably. From what I said earlier about global appeal, Celtic.

“You probably do (need 30, 40 or 50 years of history). We’re talking about something here that we can’t answer with City.”

Although City are arguably one of the most entertaining sides to watch in modern-day, they have failed to beat Celtic on the two occasions they have faced them in recent history.

The sides will meet again in the USA in July for a pre-season game in which Pep Guardiola will look to finally get the better of the Bhoys.
