Former Celtic hero Frank McAvennie reckons that new signing Oh Hyeon-gyu could be the Hoops secret weapon in the Viaplay Cup final.

The showdown will take place at Hampden on Sunday 26 February against Rangers and it is not yet known whether Kyogo Furuhashi will be available to face the Ibrox club.

Kyogo was subbed off in Celtic’s 5-1 victory against St Mirren at the weekend after sustaining a shoulder injury and is now awaiting scan results to see how severe the injury is.

He suffered a similar blow last September which meant that he had to miss out on starting the first group stage Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Many Hoops supporters will hope that Kyogo is fit for the final but Ange Postecoglou could turn to 21-year-old Oh who arrived from K-League side Suwon Samsung Bluewings in January.

One man who knows exactly what it takes to become a cup final hero for Celtic is former striker Frank McAvennie who wrote his name into the history books in 1988 by scoring the Hoops only two goals against Dundee United to help the club achieve a League and Scottish Cup double in their centenary season.

Macca as he is known reckons that Oh could cause the Rangers defence some real problems as they don’t know much about the South Korean forward.

“This next game will get him used to what is expected of him,” McAvennie told [Football Insider].

“I liked him. I was at Tannadice a couple of weeks ago when he came on. The fans loved him and he played to the crowd. He just did what everyone expected, he chased his socks off.

“He got his first goal at Celtic Park which is always great.

“I won’t be too disappointed because I think he would give [Ben] Davies and [Connor] Goldson a bit of a game. But I hope that Kyogo is fit.

“If he does not play for the next two weeks or so he might be ok and we could get a half out of him.

“Rangers do not know much about Oh so they do not know how to handle him. They know how to handle Kyogo so that could go in our favour.“
