CELTIC looked to have passed on Souttar with the Hearts player’s contract expiring in 6 months, despite the rumoured interest. [Daily Record]

Instead, it looks likely he will end up with former Celtic boss Tony Mowbray.

Souttar has been a standout in the Hearts backline this season and as a result, has attracted interest from south of the border.

Mowbray, who manages Blackburn, is pushing for promotion to the premier league this season currently sitting second, three points off the summit. He is keen to bulk his squad to keep the title push momentum going and is eyeing up moves for Ryan Hedges and John Souttar

Hinting towards the signing, Mowbray said;

We need to recruit in various parts of the pitch and hopefully we’ll get that done whether it’s loans, purchases or cross-border compensation, we’re trying to do deals to make sure we strengthen the group.

Verdict

Ultimately, Celtic haven’t really missed out on signing Souttar. I’ve never bought into the hype and believe the defender would’ve only been brought in as backup.

However, we do not require him to add to the quality of our backup. Welsh is doing well in his development, and Jullien is set to return from injury. For once, we don’t need central defenders.
