Last night, Celtic recalled young Irish striker Jonathan Afolabi before sending the 22-year old back out on loan to Scottish League One side Airdrieonians.

The Ireland under-21 internationalist has had a number of loan spells over the last few seasons, spending time with the likes of Dunfermline and Dundee in the Championship.

During the first half of this campaign, Afolabi also spent some time with Ayr United at Somerset Park but failed to pick up a run of game time under several different managers with the current Championship strugglers.

This led to him being recalled by the club, which was announced by Ayr United on Friday evening, with Airdrie announcing their signing of the frontman shortly after on loan until the end of the season.

Afolabi joins another of his fellow Celtic loanees, with Brody Paterson also joining the Penny Cars Stadium side during the January window.

Celtic appear to have been working closely with Airdrie so far this season, with midfielder Kerr McInroy also having a spell with the Diamonds from September to January. He and Afolabi have effectively swapped places, with McInroy now at Ayr.

The Irishman’s time at Celtic appears to be coming close to an end, failing to make the mark after joining in 2019 from Southampton, with his contract also coming to an end in the summer.

At the very least, hopefully, we can see a good spell for the striker in League One, attracting interest from other clubs going forward into next season.
