Celtic are reportedly set to receive a boost in their pursuit of Greek striker Georgios Giakoumakis.

In the last few days, German side Werder Bremen have also been heavily linked with the Greek striker, with Giakoumakis even going over to Germany to hold talks with the recently relegated side.

However, as quoted by the Daily Record, Bremen Director of Football Clemens Fritz has hinted that they could look to alternative options.

He said: “Our financial resources are limited, and it is important to use them in the best possible way.

“We have to be realistic and accept that other clubs can outbid us for wages.

“But it’s good to report that we are no longer forced to sell players, and we have room to move in the transfer market now.

“However, it’s important to point out that we are not so naive as to deal with just one signing target. We have a list of other targets too.

“All I can tell you is that Georgios enjoyed his tour of our club very much.

“He liked Bremen a lot.”

The VVV Venlo striker had an incredible campaign last season, finishing as Eredivisie top goalscorer with 26 goals despite his side being relegated from the Dutch league.

Many fans have started to get excited at the idea of the 26-year old joining for such a small fee of around £2.5 million. But as we have seen in the past, other sides from across Europe could nip in ahead of us.

In Bremen’s case, the words of Fritz seem to be suggesting defeat early on.

Hopefully, we can get some clarity on these comments in the next few days to come as we head towards the end of the transfer window.
