Current Celtic midfielder, Callum McGregor has admitted he has ‘a lot of sympathy’ for the relegated clubs in Scotland.

Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer are the clubs who all face relegation from their respective leagues as they were voted to end and any attempt at league reconstruction was vetoed by the majority of Scottish Clubs.

In the last ditch attempt to change the league format to 14-10-10-10 proposed by Hearts, only 16 teams voted in favour of this change meaning that it would not go ahead.

This has forced both Hearts and now in the last few hours, Partick Thistle to begin legal action against the SPFL for their relegation.

When discussing the matter with The Scotsman, McGregor gave his opinion on those who were being relegated by saying

“It’s a very difficult situation that’s been forced on everyone, the way the league was curtailed. These teams had a fighting chance of getting out. So there’s sympathy there and I’m sure every player in Scotland will be the same.

There are guys who you know at these clubs and this is going to have an impact on their livelihoods. Then there’s the backroom people, the canteen ladies, the people who wash the kit. They are the hub of any club and these seem to be the people who get most effected when these things happen.”

The Celtic midfielder does make a good point here, that there are a lot of livelihoods who will be hugely affected by this, that the majority of people dont even think about.

However, with vote after vote being rejected, it doesn’t seem as though, there would be no other way of solving this issue, that has been brewing on for months now.

These teams were just unfortunate to be at the bottom of the league, when the pandemic all kicked off, so now have to face the consequences that come with being in that position when the league if officially over.
