KIERAN TIERNEY has revealed Arsenal goalkeeper and FA Cup final hero Emiliano Martinez almost joined Celtic on-loan in the not so distant past.

The Celtic defender now plays alongside the shot stopper who has made the breakthrough into the Arsenal first team. He has been at Arsenal his whole career but has racked up many loan moves in his time.

The 27-year-old told Kieran he was close to joining Celtic at one point but never revealed why the deal didn’t go ahead.

“He (Martinez) was close to signing for Celtic on loan as well. He said Celtic had been in touch with him.” Tierney told OpenGoal.

“But he’s come in now and done brilliant.”

The goalkeeper cut an emotional figure after Arsenal’s FA Cup win. The player struggling up the ladder to make it into the first team and then win a trophy is a nice football story.

Celtic’s goalkeeping position has been locked up for quite some time. It was Fraser Forster who started the ten in a row run, before Craig Gordon took over, then back to Fraser and now Barkas is in between the sticks.

If Celtic were interested in the shot stopper, it might have just been for back up.
