DEDRYCK BOYATA has made sure there will be no Hamburg in the German top flight next season after the former Celtic defender got the goal that would help send his current club Hertha Berlin to safety.

The pair were in a relegation playoff after Hertha’s poor season in the Bundesliga while Hamburg’s late collapse in the second tier meant they only managed a playoff spot for a place in the top flight.

Hamburg led 1-0 from the first leg of the tie and were looking to finish off the game on Monday evening, but Boyata and his teammates had other ideas.

It took only 4 minutes for Dedryk to get his team level in the second leg and a second half goal from Marvin Plattenhardt was enough to seal the victory.

Boyata wheels off after early opener.

Boyata is now the captain of Hertha. The defender left Celtic on a free to join the German club. The centre-back was part of the invincible treble side under Brendan Rodgers and beyond.

However, at one point, things turned very sour when Boyata’s agent turned up during a training session at Lennoxtown demanding to speak to Brendan Rodgers over a failed move to the Premier League.

Rodgers had stopped the Belgian from moving on that summer and ironically, it was six months later Brendan would jump ship to Leicester.

Dedryck has never really went into things behind the scenes at Celtic but even when he knew he was leaving, he did put in some top shifts.

Celtic fans who have no love for Hamburg, like ourselves, will be delighted this evening.
