Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe Gittens has admitted his surprise at how Celtic tactically set up in last night’s Champions League matchday two clash.

The Hoops were humbled in Germany as they fell to an embarrassing 7-1 defeat.

Emre Can opened the scoring from the spot, and although Daizen Maeda instantly responded for the Bhoys, it only got worse from there, with Karim Adeyemi bagging a hat-trick, Serhou Guirassy scoring a brace, and Felix Nmecha grabbing one from the bench.

Following their 5-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava on matchday one, Brendan Rodgers’ men were brought right back down to earth last night.

They were outclassed by a Dortmund side who looked to have had them shell-shocked throughout.

The quality of the Bundesliga side shone through, but these heavy European defeats are regular.

Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and now Dortmund have each all taken five or more goals off the Hoops in the past eight years.

The way Celtic have set up in each of these matches is no different from when they play St. Johnstone or Ross County.

It is not working, and Dortmund winger Gittens was last night taken aback by how the Scottish Premiership champions approached the game.

The 20-year-old was asked if he was surprised by the Hoops’ tactics.

“Yeah, they wanted to high press us,” he said (TNT Sports).

“They done a good job in the first five, ten minutes but after this, we played better football.

“We started popping it around at the back, we found pockets and spaces and we got the goals.”
