It was a night to forget for Celtic as they fell to defeat against Roma in Wilfried Nancy’s first European match in charge. Evan Ferguson, who scored two for the visitors, gave a simple yet striking comment on the Hoops’ performance.
An early Liam Scales own goal immediately sent Nancy‘s side on the back foot as they failed to get to grips with Roma’s press and ultimately paid the price.
Fans knew it was always going to be a tough test, especially so early into the Frenchman’s tenure at the club, but their lack of conviction made for tough viewing for a squad who clearly need to improve in this new-look system.
Ferguson, who is on loan at the Italians from Brighton, gave his views on a Celtic side ‘in transition’.
He had scored just one competitive goal for I Giallorossi going into this game, but capitalised on Celtic mistake’s on the night and took his second goal extremely well.
He struck the post early on after some sloppy play from Reo Hatate gifted them an opportunity to extend their lead.
The Ireland international was linked with a move to the Hoops in the summer but ultimately opted for a move to Italy’s capital.
Speaking to TNT after the match, Ferguson praised the Hoops while also issuing a pretty damning statement about their performance.
He said:
“I think we obviously knew they were in the transition from the manager and stuff and they changed the formation.
“You could see at times they played well and it worked, at times they didn’t. Some people didn’t know what they were doing.
“It’s difficult when a new manager comes in and you need to buy into what he’s doing. I think they will and they’ll be fine.”
It’s clear that so many in this squad are still learning the ropes of this system, but too often did they lack in basic play on a grim night at Celtic Park.
There’s no time for Nancy’s side to dwell as they now face St Mirren in Sunday’s League Cup final at Hampden.
“Some people didn’t know what they were doing…” 😳
