Former Celtic academy duo Liam Henderson and Aaron Hickey created Serie A history as Empoli and Bologna faced off against one another last weekend.

The two players became the first Scots to have faced each other in the top flight of Italian Football, as Empoli defeated Bologna 4-2 on Sunday. They were congratulated by their former school, St Ninian’s

Both players spent varied time with the Hoops in the academy set-up.
Hickey had a shorter spell with Celtic, spending most of his time with Hearts, where he made his first senior appearances in football before earning a move to the Serie A.
Henderson spent much more of his young career with Celtic and even went on to play 37 times for the first team. However, it ultimately didn’t work out in the end, and he moved on.
It is good to see young Scottish players taking the big step to go abroad and play their football in another country, and we are probably likely to see more do the same, due to the recent examples.
