In the aftermath of Celtic’s match against St Mirren on Saturday, former referees Des Roache and Steve Conroy are calling for Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate to face a two-game suspension for what they perceived as a dive during the game.

The incident, which occurred in the 18-yard box, did not result in a penalty as the referee chose not to award one, waving play on instead.

The call for retrospective action was voiced through a tweet from the Behind the Whistles podcast account, managed by Roache and Conroy, stating: “If we want to get this kind of thing out of our game the Governing Body needs to bring in retrospective sanctions like a 2 game ban.”

This statement comes amidst a week of heated discussions regarding Fabio Silva’s diving during the last Glasgow Derby match.

Minimal contact led to a dive that was initially punished, then overturned to a penalty after VAR intervention.

Hatate’s fall in the penalty area was a result of a mere coming together with an opponent,  the midfielder did not appeal for a penalty. There was contact, but it did not warrant a penalty, aligning with the referee’s decision during the match.

The former referees’ call for a ban is wild and an overreaction, there were no such claims last week.

  1. Did they mention the 6’4 St Mirren player diving about 3 times with no contact?
Probably not as these old refs or should I say “Lodge members” only ever say anything about Celtic players

  2. Fabio Silva, his antics, todd cantwell starting a fight and slithering away, both in the Glasgow derby, Jack Butland wiping out the Ross County keeper, Goldson punching the ball, again in the same match, no cards shown, no penalties given. Nothing said about any of this. Sportscene didnt even show the handball let alone discuss it.

  3. Not a word about banning Silva for his tactics against Celtic at Ibrox, but one incident from Hatate and the brothers in black feign outrage. Even the Rangers fans were embarrassed by Silva’s antics on the day, as were sport commentators around the globe. But Roache and Conroy? Not a whimper! Now there’s objective commentary for you!!

    • Conroy slaughtered Silva. A simple Google search will confirm.

Stop being so touchy. Hatates actions were embarrassing

  4. @ jonbhoy60, Sportsmen did the exact same thing when The Doppelgangers played Kilmarnock. They never showed Killies penalty claim nor the blatant pulling back of a Killie player who would have been one on one with their keeper. No bookings in any of those incidents either.
It’s becoming the norm in Scottish football and it’s time we all started standing up to it.
I even read that Tavernier scored his 50th Scottish Premiership penalty. 50 ffs! That must be some kind of record? Disgusting!

  5. @ jonbhoy60, Regarding my previous comment, that should read “Sportscene” and not “Sportsmen”. No idea how that happened.
