Gary Lineker, the renowned BBC host and ex-England footballer, recently hailed Celtic’s dramatic last-minute victory over Motherwell as one of his ‘moments of the week’ on his podcast, The Rest is Football.
Lineker was captivated by the rollercoaster of emotions that unfolded at Fir Park, where Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side managed to snatch victory from the jaws of a draw.
As the match neared its conclusion with just three minutes remaining, it seemed Celtic were had just squeaked by with a win at Fir Park. Luis Palma’s late goal looked to have sealed it for the bhoys. However, Motherwell had other plans, delivering a shock equaliser that sent their fans into a frenzy and onto the pitch in jubilation.
But the euphoria was short-lived. Celtic fans had the last laugh when Matt O’Riley converted Greg Taylor’s superb cross. This last-gasp goal ensured that Celtic walked away with all three points, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.
Gary Lineker was clearly impressed, saying, “Moment of the week. I don’t know if anyone saw it, but I saw the highlights of Celtic and Motherwell. It was such a mad game. I think Celtic scored in the 87th minute, then we know we get long injury times at present, then Motherwell equalised in the 95th minute and then Celtic scored the winner again in the 97th minute. They are top of the league there.”
Lineker also had warm words for Brendan Rodgers, who once managed Leicester City. “Brendan Rodgers. Very popular amongst us Leicester fans. Always will be for giving us the glory of the FA Cup. We are getting some exciting finales.”
This match was a testament to the sheer resilience and never-say-die attitude of Celtic, qualities that have put them at the top of the Premiership. It’s moments like these that make football and Celtic have specialised in them over the years.
