Brendan Rodgers thought he had his defence in place for the season when it comes to his centre-back selections. By Thursday, he had successfully brought in Carl Starfelt’s replacement and signed Stephen Welsh up to a new long term deal.

By Friday afternoon, Rodgers would have been cursing his luck when an accidental collision at Lennoxtown saw Stephen Welsh hobble off the training field.

It has since transpired the defender will be out for a two month period, leaving the Irishman with a decision to make.

Does he go ahead as planned and bank of Lagerbielke and Nawrocki hitting the ground running while CCV and Welsh get back to full fitness, allowing both Kobayashi and Scales to go out on either loan or a permanent basis. Or does the Celtic manager keep one of them in his back pocket until January?

Kobayashi and Scales are both destined for the Celtic Park exit door, however, it could be delayed due to Stephen’s injury. Aberdeen are keen to bring Liam back to Pittodrie after his successful loan spell last season, but they may now be sweating on that deal seeing the image of Welsh on crutches.

It’s now a dead cert that Celtic will play with a centre-back pairing against Kilmarnock that haven’t played together before. Either Nawrocki and Lagerbielke get the nod or Iwata or Scales come in.

Should rODgers hold his nerve and look to offload the two players this window?
