He hasn’t been officially announced yet, but Kwon Hyeok-kyu has already set his sights on becoming the best player at Celtic to facilitate a move to a higher league down the line.

In a refreshing change of pace, the South Korean defensive midfielder has made it clear he is ambitious and believes he can reach the very top of the game.

Players don’t tend to make statements like this on the way into the club, but as supporters, we know the guys who come and sign for the Hoops won’t be here forever.

Our current manager Brendan Rodgers left us for the EPL four years ago in a bid to facilitate his own ambitions, so it should hardly surprise anybody that a player coming from South Korea doesn’t see Celtic as their final destination.

He said: “I received a lot of help from Busan I-Park since my youth days in middle school. I will work hard to become a player that the Busan club and juniors will be proud of.

“I will become the best player in Celtic and go to higher places such as the German Bundesliga or the English Premier League.”

There will likely be some kickback to these comments that have been cited by Record Sport taken from a South Korean publication.

If Kwon is confident in his abilities and becomes a regular for Celtic then the door will be open to a move in the future. As long as he comes here to roll his sleeves up and get to work, we will reap the benefits of the 22-year-old’s ambitions in the short term and make a hefty financial gain if he can fulfil his potential.
