Former Celtic fullback Jeremie Frimpong has opened up on his recent departure for Bayern Leverkusen saying ‘It was the right time to leave’

Speaking to the Athletic, Frimpong discussed the attraction of the Bundesliga and moving to a ‘big club’ such as Leverkusen whilst also naming a few of his inspirations who helped him during his time at the club.

“It was the right time to leave Celtic because it was about a big club like Leverkusen coming, rather than about Celtic.
“And obviously the Bundesliga was really attractive. So when they came, I was like ‘I could play in the Bundesliga!’, and that was it really.
“I was watching Bundesliga anyway, and Bayer Leverkusen were playing a lot.
“For me, I’ve always wanted to play in the top leagues, and I consider the Bundesliga to be top three in the world. I wanted to take this challenge to see if I can handle it.
“For me, I play to win trophies, as I’ve said. I want to play for winning teams, and I want to win a lot more. I’m 20, I’ve got a lot of years to play and prove myself. I’ve still got a lot of work to do.
“Neil Lennon — sorry, the gaffer! — was the first manager to give me my start, so I’ll always respect him for that.
“I think I was close to everyone. First day I clicked with everyone straight away.
“The captain Scott Brown gave me a lot of information, taught me about the game, the club. Callum (McGregor) was good as well, so was Boli (Bolingoli). Jonny Hayes as well. They taught me how I should use my ability and adapting to the country.”

Frimpong was a player who was highly rated, not only within the club but also the supporters.

When it was announced he would be leaving the club it did come as a bit of a surprise, with many thinking the 20-year would be apart of the rebuild that is ahead in the summer.

To move to a club and a league such as the Bundesliga shows how much the Dutch fullback has impressed in his short time in Scotland and if developed properly he could go on to fulfil his potential.
