SCOTLAND Under 21s boss Scot Gemmill has confirmed hot Celtic prospect Mikey Johnston will NOT fly out with the squad to Spain as his team get set to play Turkey in a Friendly.

Johnston was called up to the squad but has been ruled out of playing any part in international duty and will remain at the club for treatment.

Mikey has made seven appearances for Celtic so far this season and got 18 minutes in front of the Celtic Park crowd when the bhoys destroyed Hearts 5-0 a couple of weeks ago.

The youngster, however, did not make the Celtic squad for the Livingston game where the bhoys played out a 0-0 draw at Almondvale – signs the midfielder was struggling with an injury.

This has been confirmed by Gemmill this afternoon via SunSport:

“We’ve had a couple of players pull out through injuries which is unfortunate.

“Mikey isn’t ready to play, we won’t be calling any others into the squad.

“The trip was about giving players game time so we will go with the group we have.”

Celtic have been struggling with injuries since the start of the season and been operating with a barebone squad at points.

Scott Brown, Leigh Griffiths, Olivier Ntcham, Daniel Arzani, Nir Bitton, Jozo Simunovic, Craig Gordon, Cristian Gamboa and now Mikey Johnston adds to the list.

It’s unclear at the moment if the player has pulled out of the Scotland squad as a precaution.
