Flamboyant winger Jota’s switch from Celtic to Al-Ittihad came right of the blue.

Hoops’ supporters were shocked when news of the transfer initially surfaced, although the move shortly became a reality. The 24-year-old was announced as a new Al-Ittihad player last week, although his debut for the club could be slightly delayed.

This is due to the fact that the Saudi Arabian champions are in £20 million of debt. According to the Saudi newspaper Okaz (via Glasgow Times), they have been ordered to pay this back by the 27th of July, the start of the Saudi version of the Champions League.

If this requirement is not fulfilled, it is said that Al-Ittihad could be banned from fielding any of their new signings. This means that it could be a while before Jota makes his long-awaited first appearance in the Middle East.

Of course, this news will be hugely frustrating for the Portuguese attacker. A setback to his big-money move would not have been in his plans, although some things in football are uncontrollable.

It is unknown whether Al-Ittihad plan to pay these debts off or if they will even be able to. Jota will be hoping his new club can and do as it is certain he will be itching to get on the pitch.
