Celtic’s £3 million summer signing Gustaf Lagerbielke has openly expressed his intention to reassess his future with the Scottish champions due to a significant lack of playing time.

Despite arriving at Parkhead with high expectations after being named the Swedish league’s defender of the year for his performances at IF Elfsborg, Lagerbielke has found opportunities under Brendan Rodgers to be scarce, starting just six times this season.

Lagerbielke’s frustration was compounded in January when a potential move to Serie A’s Lecce was blocked at the last minute by Celtic, due to Cameron Carter-Vickers’ injury setback.

Speaking to Aftonbladet, Lagerbielke shared his aspirations and the current predicament he faces at Celtic.

“There were many clubs that were interested,” the defender said.

“But then there was an injury situation in the club, which meant that nothing came of it. It was cancelled because of the injury.

“Right now the focus is on training as well as possible and continuing to show that I can play. We can still win the Double as we fight with Rangers for the league title and stay in the cup as well. I want to play and will do everything in my power to help the team. At the same time, I know that I can play in the best leagues, so it is a situation we will review after the season.”

The writing seems to be on the wall for Lagerbielke with a summer exit looking like a certainty. He’s not in Rodgers’ plans for whatever reason, that’s clear to see with Liam Scales and Stephen Welsh both starting ahead of the Swede.
