The failed John McGinn summer transfer doesn’t seem to want to go away. Every goal or assist he gets down in England seems to be Celtic news. He is having a fantastic start with his new club who currently sit in the playoff positions, he could be playing in the EPL next season.

But Neil Lennon just revealed new information about the deal that will make a lot of Celtic fans happy the deal did not happen or at least the version of the deal were Ryan Christie went to Easter Road.

From The Sunday Business Post:

“I tried to get Ryan to Hibs at the start of the season, before he made his impact here. “There was talk of John McGinn signing for Celtic, and we were very keen to take Ryan to Easter Road. “It’s obviously worked out well for him, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him on the pitch.

“Ryan was a real catalyst, once he got into the Celtic team, for a lot of good performances. “The one which sticks out is the League Cup semi-final against Hearts. “His second-half performance was superb and the team went on to have a great win that day.

“He’s not looked back since.”

Now when fit, Ryan is one of the first names on the Celtic team sheet. He was sorely missed for the time he was injured and he proved that by getting straight back in among the goals on his return. The midfielder will be vital for Celtic’s push for another treble.

  1. When Celtic were still taking a lot of heat for having “lost” out in trying to sign John McGinn Ryan Christie was clearly showing signs that he intended to stay at Celtic. On loan at Aberdeen anytime I watched him play he was 1-2 the best player on the field. Because of an outdated rule or agreement, whatever, he never got to show his obvious talents against Celtic. Reading Brendan’s much later comments about Christie it is clear that he came close to being overlooked by Celtic — again.
At the height of the veiled criticism of Lawell for having missed the chance to sign McGinn for a relatively low figure I posed the question in a Disqus letter to ‘The Scotsman’:
“If Celtic had signed John McGinn would Ryan Christie still be at Celtic or would he have been sold or again
    loaned out?”
The point being that sometimes a ‘loss’ is merely a harbinger of better things to come….
Yes it would be nice to have both McGinn and Christie at Celtic but given that McGinn’s presence at Celtic may have again led to Christie being overlooked and he may very well be playing for ?????…..
McGinn is a very good player and his value has gone up astronomically so he is a big miss but is he a bigger miss than what Christie may well have been? Is he?
