Matt O’Riley said he fell in love with Celtic instantly after he had a conversation about the club with Joe Hart.
Matt O’Riley has quickly become a central figure at Parkhead since his move from MK Dons in 2022. Despite being only 23, O’Riley has amassed 113 appearances, netted 32 goals, and provided 22 assists, making a significant impact in Scottish football.
O’Riley shared insights from a revealing conversation with former teammate Joe Hart about the unique atmosphere surrounding Celtic. Hart, with his extensive experience at the highest levels of football, confirmed to O’Riley that there really is no other club quite like Celtic.
As quoted by RecordSport, O’Riley said: “I actually asked Joe that. I asked if there’s anywhere else like this and he said ‘no, not at all’. He’s played at the highest level with the best players and the biggest clubs. But it just shows the passion and love for Celtic, both sides of Glasgow – I’m sure Rangers will say the same – but the love and intensity for both their clubs is so strong that naturally you get sucked in and fall in love with the team.
“I don’t think anyone realises how big the club is until you get here. I realised on my first day just how big it was. I’ve told this story before. I was viewing properties, and there were builders running after me, and I honestly thought, ‘What is happening here?’ I wasn’t used to it.
“It was that intensity and passion from people, it sucks you right in. So naturally, I’ve been in love with the club for a long time. Hopefully, that shows by dedication and performance. I’m really enjoying it and hopefully still will.”
Despite the attention from major clubs like Atletico Madrid, who made a failed bid in January, O’Riley remains focused on Celtic’s ongoing campaign. He is determined to contribute to the team’s efforts to secure a domestic double this season. He’s actually banned his parent and agent from talking to him about potential moves away.
