Matt O’Riley has missed out on a call-up to Denmark’s squad for their friendlies against Switzerland and the Faroe Islands, with Christian Eriksen re-entering the squad.

Despite the setback Matt O’Riley remains in contention for a spot in Denmark’s Euro 2024 squad, according to the national team’s manager, Kasper Hjulmand.

O’Riley has had a standout season at Parkhead, which has seen him enter the international fold last year.

Having earned just one senior cap so far, O’Riley’s absence from the 26-man pool could have been a demoralizing blow. However, Hjulmand’s recent comments provide a silver lining and a clear message of hope for the Celtic playmaker. The Danish manager emphasised the fluid nature of squad selection, suggesting that performances at the club level in the coming months could significantly influence the final roster for Euro 2024.

“It is not impossible to make it to the Euros, even if you are not in the squad this time. There are talented players who have not been selected this time, but who have the opportunity to come to Germany,” the manager said as quoted by RecordSport.

“There is also the possibility that I can take players to the Euros that I have never selected before, even if they are not with it this time. I have a few things in mind. It was a close selection.”

The Denmark squad for the doubleheader against Sweden and Norway in June will give a greater insight into what the team for the Euros could look like.
