A football pitch in Hamilton at a Sports hub named after Celtic legend Jock Stein has been vandalised by a group of youths, according to the Glasgow Times.

David Booth, general manager of the facilities said: “A group of youths set fire to six square meters of the pitch surface along with one of the seven-a-side goals.

“Police Scotland have visited the site and reviewed the CCTV footage and are now looking into the matter.”

The synthetic surface will now need to be replaced and most bookings at the hub have now been cancelled as a result.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a facility linked with a former Celtic hero vandalised. A few years ago, the Johnny Thomson 3G pitch was damaged.

Setting fire to the pitch shows a lack of any sort of decency by the people involved.

Jock Stein was and still is a giant of Scottish football. He’s still the only manager to lead a Scottish Club to the pinnacle of European football.

We hope whoever has vandalised the pitch will be found and dealt with in the proper manner.

As we look to get back open and out and about after a long lockdown – having a football pitch shut down due to mindless thugs should not be acceptable.
