Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has missed out on a return to management after recently being linked with English League One side Sunderland.

The Black Cats were recently left without a boss after the sacking of Lee Johnston, which led to many names being linked to the job, including two former Celtic midfielders in Roy Keane and Neil Lennon.

However, neither of those men took the role as next permanent manager at the Stadium of Light, with the job instead going to another boss with links to Scottish Football, as ex Hamilton Accies and Norwich manager Alex Neil was announced on Friday evening.

Lennon has been out of work since last February, with it coming up to a year since the Northern Irishman departed Parkhead after a disappointing campaign in 2020/21.

However, the 50-year old has stated on multiple occasions how keen he is to get back into management once again, with the Sunderland role looking like a potential opportunity in the last few weeks.

For now, Lennon will have to wait for that opportunity. It will certainly be interesting to see what his next role ends up being.
