FORMER Ibrox and Hibs star Kevin Thomson has backed his former Hibs and Scotland teammate Steven Fletcher for a move to Celtic Park.

Speaking to BT Sports, the retired midfielder speculated on potential candidates to fill Celtic’s current striker vacancy, and Thomson believes the Scottish Champions should look no further than Fletcher.

“I wonder if Steven Fletcher could potentially be a name that could excite Brendan Rodgers.” he told BT Sports live on air.

“I think he’s a top player, he would score goals. I think the way Celtic play as well, having young legs in midfield now.

“He would certainly give that team a platform. I don’t think he’s going to run in behind now, but he’d certainly link the midfield to front.

“He’s had a terrific career and I’m pretty sure Brendan will know a lot about Steven Fletcher.”

Steven Fletcher is never going to be a name to get Celtic fans excited. There was a time when the Parkhead fanbase were screaming for the club to sign the striker from Hibs.

The infamous January transfer window where all Celtic needed was just something extra up top; Peter Lawwell refused to budge on price for Fletcher to land the player for his manager Gordon Strachan. Instead, Celtic signed Willo Flood and the bhoys would go on to lose the league on the last day of the season.

Lawwell spoke later about that particular window being embedded on his tombstone.

However, now it’s a case of Steven Fletcher, and Celtic in the same sentence sends shivers up most Celtic fans spine and not just Peter Lawwell.

Now 31, Fletcher plays for Sheffield Wednesday.
