Celtic captain Callum McGregor made his first start since the end of February in the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final with Aberdeen last Saturday.

The skipper got the nod at the base of midfield but didn’t look his usual self.

Replacing Tomoki Iwata in the engine room, McGregor wasn’t as energetic as usual and didn’t particularly stand out.

Pundit Stephen McGinn thinks there are still doubts over his condition. He said: [Go Radio via RecordSport] “The one question mark still is the fitness of Callum McGregor.

“I did wonder what part he would have to play and I think giving him the start last week is an indication he will get back to full fitness before the end of the season, but I didn’t think last week he looked 100 per cent.

“I don’t think he was quite as free-flowing. There were a couple of times you thought he was going to grab this game by the scruff of the neck and he didn’t.”

One assumes that because the 30-year-old played and returned to the lineup last Saturday, he will get the nod again in Dundee.

It is difficult to see McGregor being dropped, but he wasn’t at his usual standard versus the Dons. His displays must get better but with a continual improvement in fitness, they naturally will.

Indeed, Brendan Rodgers admitted in his press conference yesterday that the captain is getting better and is sharper in training.

His return to full fitness is only positive ahead of a critical six games that will define the Celts’ season.
