STAN PETROV believes Callum McGregor should be the next Celtic captain and hit back at anyone suggesting he shouldn’t be because he’s not as vocal as Broony.

Scott Brown will head to Aberdeen in the summer and at that point, a new captain will have to be selected. McGregor has been taking on those duties when Brown hasn’t played this season.

The midfielder has also face the music plenty of times this season after a horrible result and not shirked away from the responsibility.

Speaking on the Huddle podcast, Petrov revealed McGregor reminds him of a captain he had while he was at Celtic:

“I had a great captain that reminds me of Callum McGregor, that’s Jackie McNamara.

“He wasn’t as vocal as everybody else, he was very calm, always analysed the situation well.

“He was always there to help, understood the dressing room”

Because Scott has been such a massive fiery figure in the heart of the Celtic midfield some do think McGregor would be out of his depth.

To be a captain you have to garner the respect of your teammates and be able to carry the burden of expectation on your shoulder.

I believe Jackie did that and it’s why Callum will be able to do the same.

In the grand scheme of things, the next Celtic captain is the least of Celtic’s worries but it’s certainly going to be something which is decided before the beginning of next season.
