Hatate signed a new five-year deal on Friday, committing his future to the club until 2028.

Sutton believes that with the contract situation settled, Hatate’s primary focus should be on regaining his fitness and top form after he’s missed the majority of the games so far due to injury.

The summer brought a wave of speculation surrounding Hatate, with the player unsettled with interest from other clubs, and was wanting to wait until the transfer window had shut before he engaged in transfer talks.

In the Daily Record, Sutton wrote;

“Likewise he can rest easy now Reo Hatate’s contract situation has been resolved and he signed a new five year deal. Hatate’s main focus should now be on getting back to fitness and top form. There were signs at Livingston he was getting there but he’s not played much football this season and is not yet up to speed.
“There was a lot of speculation surrounding him in the summer and Rodgers seemed to suggest it was a distraction. Getting injured didn’t help. I have no problem with players looking to get big moves in the medium to long term. It’s the Celtic model and they should want players who are ambitious.
“But it’s over to Hatate. There is no doubt he was one of the stars of last season and if a huge bid had come in over the summer it would have been no surprise. At the moment though he’s not the same player. If he is thinking about a move, either in January or next summer, then he needs to get back to those levels – and kick on again.”

Chris Sutton sees Reo Hatate’s new contract as a positive development, allowing the player to concentrate on his game without the distractions of contract uncertainties and transfer speculations.

The expectation is clear: Hatate needs to rediscover and surpass his form from last season, fulfilling his potential as one of Celtic’s standout players.
