As an Irishman, I took some joy in Scotland’s draw against England the other night. Watching the English build their team up as world-beaters in every international tournament only to fall flat on their face is some sort of mild antidote to how terrible the Irish team is.

But one overriding thought plagued my mind for ninety-odd minutes, the thought of “what if”. Towards the end of the game, it was what if Scotland come up with a winner. Close, but no cigar.

That thought process was applied throughout the game. What if Celtic didn’t sell Teirneny?, What if the board had have stumped up the cash for McGinn? What if someone at Celtic spotted the future Andy Robertson had in football?

Then you look at the performance of Calum McGregor and think what if some English club is thinking this Celtic player can mix it up with no problem with what is supposed to be the best midfeilders England has to offer. Celtic must be wary of the potential for heads to be turned. It’s the last thing we need.

Ryan Christie and Cal Mac have spent the last two seasons at Celtic been constantly linked with moves down south. Most of the time it was probably just paper talk. But if there were any EPL clubs with a microscope on McGregor his performance on Friday night could easily have churned up some proper interest.

You can only hope McGregor and Christie return to Celtic Park rejuvenated with some sort of new focus as last season was painful from the new year up to the final whistle.

Christie’s contract situation means he is the one most likely to leave this summer – but can Ange and Celtic change his mind?

  1. Ex Celtic, current Celtic and soon-to-be Celtic players make the bulk of the Scotland squad and the nation is the better for it. I have to say i think both England and the Czech Republic are very ordinary sides and Scotland will be frustrated they haven’t taken 4 points from the first two fixtures. The English are very like Sevco in that they’re only heros in their own house. Aside from the laugh their overinflated egos routinely provide, to the rest of us they’re largely irrelevant. I think Scotland will struggle in the last match and they must be kicking themselves about losing at home to the Czechs as it’ll be that game which cost them.
