THE SPFL has announced a significant rule change for the forthcoming season, mandating the use of a “multi-ball system” in league matches.

The decision was made public in a statement issued on Monday, following a recommendation from the competition’s working group chaired by Steven Gunn of Aberdeen.

The SPFL statement read:

“A recommendation from the competitions working group chaired by Steven Gunn of Aberdeen that cinch Premiership clubs be required to operate a multi-ball system in league matches and all other clubs be required to notify their preferred system to the SPFL in advance of the season starting.”

Under the new rule, all cinch Premiership clubs will be required to operate a multi-ball system during league matches.

This move is seen as an effort to streamline gameplay and reduce unnecessary delays.

Last season, the high-intensity football played by Celtic was frequently disrupted at away venues, with the ball being out of play for unnecessary extended periods. The introduction of the multi-ball system is expected to address this issue, ensuring a smoother and more continuous flow of play.

The multi-ball system allows for multiple balls to be stationed around the pitch, ready to be introduced immediately when the ball in play goes out of bounds. This system is designed to minimise downtime and maintain the pace of the game, which is particularly beneficial for teams that employ a high-intensity, fast-paced style of play and goes against teams like Livingston who want to slow the game down.

As the new season approaches, with just under three weeks’ wait now, all eyes will be on how this rule change impacts the dynamics of the game. Will it indeed lead to a more fluid and high-paced game as intended, or will it introduce a new set of challenges for the teams and referees to manage? Only time will tell.
