The international break is in place and it gives us a chance to do some SPFL housekeeping.

A while back, we looked at the SPFL penalties against chart and during the break, we’ve decided to update the table to show how many penalties have been conceded for each club.

Celtic conceded another penalty at the weekend against Hibernian, putting them on 7 penalties conceded for the season so far.

Aberdeen have the highest count of penalties against with a whopping 12.

Ross County has only conceded one penalty, something that seems like a bit of an anomaly.

Astonishingly, there is one club yet to receive a single penalty against this season. A quite incredible feat with only nine games to go.

The penalty count really ramped up when VAR came into play. Celtic were conceding penalties if the ball got within three feet of their hand before the World Cup. We then saw a shift in the handball interpretation that meant nobody was getting a penalty, now there’s a inconsistent interpretation of the rule across any matchday.

Surely the teams with a lower count will see penalties conceded between now and the end of the season. All these decisions even themselves out over a season, don’t they…

  1. Interesting. A team average around 25% of play in their half of the field…7 pens. A team that averages around 35% of the play in their half….0 penalties and I don’t know the stats for the ball being in eithers penalty box.
