BRENDAN RODGERS didn’t mince his words when it came to how important he feels it is to be in peak physical condition as a footballer.
Speaking about Leigh Griffiths’ self-imposed international call off earlier this month the Irishman first backed his player before making it very clear of what he expects and why he expects it.
Rodgers always talks about tempo and intensity when he discusses his squad. He demands they give everything and he makes sure they’re in the right shape to do so.
Leigh had been looking sluggish before the international break and chose to take the time off to work on his overall fitness.
Speaking about the importance of fitness, Brendan Rodgers has made it clear every single Celtic player knows what’s expected of them.
“Our supporters live their lives for this club. The least they players can do for them is make sure they’re fit.” said the Irishman.
“Fans travel thousands of miles to come to our games, invest their money and lives into football and that’s what they expect.
“Leigh was brave enough at least to think he wasn’t at the right level where he could help his county and very importantly help Celtic.
“You get paid a lot of money here, sometimes you’ll play sometimes you won’t. The least that’s required is you’re physically right.”
It shows you the mark of the Celtic manager that he does not want to present a team that looks disinterested or unwilling to give their all for the fans.
Of course, all the players in the dressing room should already know this as Rodgers and his team drill it into them every day in training.
Leigh was unfortunate and picked up an injury two days into his new regime, he also had an illness at the weekend which 100% ruled him out of the Hibs game.
It will be up to the striker to get back into shape and firing on all cylinders very quickly.
