Former Celtic and now Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has recently revealed the key factor that attracted him to both clubs. In Glasgow, he was a hit, winning five trophies in two years and so far down South, he has excelled.

The Aussie gaffer secured a treble in his second season in charge of the Hoops, and the club’s lack of success in the season before he joined heavily attracted him to the job. He said (FourFourTwo via Daily Record): “The biggest motivation for me was taking over a big club that hadn’t had success. They’re just the kind of challenges I love and it’s pretty regular in my story – taking over a club which has had a disappointing year and is craving success.”

The season before Postecoglou came to Glasgow, the Bhoys didn’t get their hands on a single piece of silverware, and the now 58-year-old has admitted that period of time would have felt like an age. He said: “Celtic a year (without winning) – and a year at Celtic feels more like 15 years everywhere else!”

There are undoubtedly high standards at Parkhead, and rightly so. The 2020/21 season was evidence of this.

In spite of these ideals, Postecoglou never felt any pressure from the club’s hierarchy when in charge: “You know you’re going to have to turn things around quickly but I never felt pressure from the people at the club. They really wanted to get back to playing the football the fans wanted and have success but they knew it was going to take time as the team needed regenerating.”

Although many felt as though it would take a fair while for the Hoops to get back to the top, in reflection, it didn’t. Postecoglou came in at the start of 2021/22 and in that season, he masterminded a league and league cup double.

The following campaign, the Bhoys won the domestic treble and if it weren’t for the now Spurs gaffer and the outstanding job he had done in helping Celtic recover from a disastrous Covid season, the club wouldn’t be in the prosperous position they are today.
