Brendan Rodgers’ endorsement of Yang Hyun-Jun as a rough diamond with potential underscores the optimistic view Celtic holds for the winger, despite recent challenges.

Since arriving from the K-League, where he clinched the Young Player of the Year award, expectations have been high for Yang. Rodgers has been vocal about the South Korean’s need for development, particularly in decision-making and execution during crucial moments.

Rodgers’ previous comments, “He has areas to improve, awareness of when to release the pass and make the cross, but these are all items that will come with more work and development. But I love his attitude and I love the energy that he brings to the game, and he will continuously improve I’m sure,” highlights the belief in Yang’s capacity to evolve as a player under the right guidance.

This developmental journey was put to the test in the recent 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock. Yang, introduced at halftime for Luis Palma, who was having a less-than-stellar game, found himself at the centre of a critical moment. His decision to cut inside and beat his man, only to lose possession subsequently after showing too much of the ball, played a part in the sequence leading to Kilmarnock’s equalizer. While it’s evident that multiple Celtic players could have intervened to reclaim control, the inception of the issue stemmed from Yang’s hesitation and eventual loss of the ball.

This moment serves as a practical example of the areas Rodgers has pinpointed for improvement

For Yang, it’s a learning opportunity, underscoring the importance of tactical awareness and the timing of passes — skills that are developed over time and with experience.

There does seem to be a player in Yang, but, right now, that’s not what’s needed at Celtic. Proven quality and experience is needed.

  1. Yang did more than Palma, he can get past players, he can cut inside, Bernabei came on and that side of the pitch was void of support.
He has enthusiasm, don’t knock it out of him.
