When Fares Ghedjemis turned Celtic down in January, it was expected that the Hoops would try again for his signature in the summer.

The transfer window rolled around, and Celtic tried again, but this time Frosinone had moved the goalposts, and the Hoops looked elsewhere for other targets.

In the end, they signed Hassiem Hassan, who Martin O’Neill had reached out to before the World Cup. The Egyptian winger went on to impress in the tournament and already had his heart set on Celtic. It took a few weeks, but the deal eventually happened, and the 24-year-old made his debut in the Hoops at the weekend.

Ghedjemis was a player the Hoops were interested in, but he was keen to see out a promotion push with his club and make a move this summer.

And that’s exactly what he’s doing. With Celtic going elsewhere, so is he.

Just a few weeks ago, Martin O’Neill had confirmed the Hoops had a “very, very strong interest” in the 15-goal winger, but he’s now heading to Ligue 1 to join Monaco, in a deal worth around €10m. [L’Equipe]

Meanwhile, Celtic are looking to fill the void left by Arne Engels, sign a left-back and a goalie. But, as things stand, none of those tasks are close, with Martin O’Neill on Tuesday admitting that the club probably wouldn’t manage to get any new faces in for the Champions League qualifier against LASK, with the first leg tomorrow night.
