CHRIS SUTTON has performed a significant u-turn on Celtic star Craig Gordon.

Historically, the BT pundit has been critical of the Celtic goalkeeper with certain aspects of his game; this even prompted a reaction from the goalkeeper last season saying Sutton had a problem with him for whatever reason.

The outspoken former Celtic striker always forthrightly gives his opinion, but we had to do a double take of his RecordSport column this morning when Sutton admitted he has sympathy for the goalkeeper after he was replaced by Scott Bain at the turn of the year.

“I have a lot of sympathy for Craig Gordon. I know he’s sometimes felt I had it in for him but that wasn’t the case.

“I praised him for his displays before the break and thought he made some superb saves against Rangers.

“There is no getting away from the fact his distribution caused a few of those problems and it was only a matter of time before Bain got his chance.

“I was a little surprised it came along when it did but Celtic have yet to concede a goal this year, so it’s obviously worked.

Bain has yet to concede a goal for Celtic this year which the goalkeeper puts down to a resolute defence more than anything else. Gordon has been fantastic for Celtic and he finds himself on the outside looking in at the moment with some pretty big games coming up.

There’s no denying Scott deserves his chance to show he can be the man going forward, big games at Tynecastle, Killie and Valencia will surely settle where the goalkeeper will land in the grand scheme of things.
