Chris Sutton has hit out at Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and insisted that Scotland boss Steve Clarke was correct to leave him out of the nations Euros squad.

As quoted by the Daily Record speaking on BT Sport Score this evening, Sutton questioned why we keep hearing that the 30-year old striker is the countries ‘best finisher’ and claimed fitness could have been an issue had he been selected for Clarke’s 26-man squad.

“Leigh Griffiths? We keep hearing this argument: ‘he’s the best finisher’.

“Fact of the matter is you’re going into a major tournament, what if something happens to Dykes? What if something happens to Adams?

“(If) they get injured, can Leigh Griffiths then go and play 90 minutes? That’s not going to happen.

“Steve Clarke has got that call spot on.”

After what has been a disappointing season for Griffiths as a whole, it didn’t come as much of a surprise to see him left out of Wednesday’s squad announcement, which saw Steve Clarke take Lyndon Dykes, Che Adams and Kevin Nesbit ahead of him.

Some fans backed the Hoops frontman to make it in the final 26 and go to the Euros with the national side but ultimately he has struggled this season with injuries and at times in front of goal.

I don’t think there is really much at all you can argue with when it comes to Sutton’s arguments about the striker.
