Celtic’s pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis is far from over, with Champions League qualification proving key in any breakthrough.

The Hoops face LASK in Tuesday night’s second leg and, should they qualify, Gineitis could soon be added to their ranks.

The Torino midfielder has been linked with a move to Glasgow for much of the summer window. CeltsAreHere understands that should a bid be made, personal terms would prove not to be an issue as the midfielder is keen on the move.

Sky Sports reports that the 22-year-old is believed to be valued in the region of £10m by the Serie A club.

And one of the broadcaster’s most prominent Italian journalists, Gianluca Di Marzio, has issued an update regarding Gineitis’ next move, saying Celtic “remain focused”.

In the article that Di Marzio linked (by Sky Sports’ Luca Bendoni), the Hoops’ pursuit of Gineitis rests on the outcome of their match in Austria, with around £40 million secured for the team who progresses to the league phase of the Champions League. Bendoni says:

“The Scots are ‘still there,’ but negotiations are currently in a phase of natural anticipation, closely tied to their on-field commitments. This evening, Celtic will be involved in a very delicate UEFA Champions League preliminary round. This is a crucial event not only for their sporting ambitions, but also for finalising their budget and transfer strategies.

“TOMORROW IS THE KEY DAY – Everything is postponed until tomorrow. Once the European commitment is over and their Champions League fate is known, the Glasgow club’s management will make their assessments. Only in the next few hours will it be clear whether the interest in Gineitis will turn into a decisive move.”

The Celts are expected to splash the cash on further additions to add to the four they have brought in this summer. Left-back Landon Emenalo’s loan move is imminent, while Niko Sigur remains a midfield option who is also capable of playing right-back in Alistair Johnston’s absence. Bosnian World Cup star Ermin Mahmic has held “advanced” talks with the Hoops, with the attacking midfielder reportedly close to a £7 million move, rising with add-ons.

The middle of the park is key as they look to replace Arne Engels and add more physicality.

A goalkeeper remains on the radar, with Blackburn Rovers’ Balazs Toth and IF Brommapojkarna’s Leo Cavallius – no bids have been formally made, however.

While full focus remains on getting the job done against LASK, the transfer work doesn’t stop. O’Neill needs reinforcements; that much is clear, but any further Gineitis move could hinge on what happens in Linz on Tuesday night.
